Smoking Addiction

This problem has many names: nicotine addiction, cigarette addiction, smoking addiction, tobacco addiction (and perhaps marijuana addiction)

You have heard, over and over, the health reasons to quit-- cancer, heart disease, emphysema, cost-- to name a few. And around Vancouver, it is getting more and more difficult to find places in which you can smoke.

Nicotine is:

  • 1000 times stronger than alcohol
  • 10 to 100 times stronger than barbiturates
  • 5 to 10 times stronger than cocaine or morphine

“Although it may be tough to break your nicotine addiction, the benefits are well worth the effort. If you manage to quit smoking before you are 35, you'll miss out on at least 90 percent of the health risks associated with tobacco use. If you quit before you are 50, you can halve your risk of dying in the next 15 years, compared with those who continue smoking.

But, no matter what your age, your health will benefit if you stop using tobacco. Just 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your heart rate goes down. Twelve hours later, the carbon monoxide levels in your blood return to normal. Your lung function improves and your circulation starts to get better between two weeks and three months after your last cigarette. Between one and nine months after quitting, your risk of infections drops and coughing and shortness of breath decrease. After one year, the risk of coronary artery disease drops by half. And, after five to fifteen years, your stroke risk will be the same as that of a nonsmoker.” (Mayo Clinic)

For those who believe that marijuana (cannabis or pot) is no more dangerous than nicotine, and lump it in with cigarettes, , pot has four to five times the tar content of cigarettes and two to three times the carbon monoxide! In other words, more bad effects. To say nothing of the munchies (increased appetite).

A smoking addiction is similar to other addictions in the following ways:

  • Physical Dependence:
Tolerance, Dependence, and Withdrawal Symptoms
  • Psychological Dependence:
Stimulation, Tension Reduction, Habit, Craving, Relaxation
  • Social Factors:
Social Activities, Family & Cultural Activities

As with any addiction, it can be done.

Working with an experienced addictions specialist such as myself makes sense, and will add to the likelihood of success. Congratulations on starting your search to find help! I look forward to meeting with you.
